We will ONLY be offering Single Engine Private Pilot and  Single Engine Commercial training at this location. 

Our Grimes Field location will offer training in our DA 20, DA 40 and Cessna 120

Urbana, Grimes Field
Grimes Field (FAA LID: I74) is a city-owned public-use airport located one nautical mile (1.85 km) north of the central business district of Urbana, a city in Champaign County, Ohio, United States.

The airport is named after Warren G. Grimes, a forefather in the field of aviation lighting, and his Grimes Manufacturing Company operated the airport until 1987. It primarily serves general aviation traffic.

Although it is owned by the City of Urbana, Grimes Field is self-supporting.

Grimes Municipal Airport

  • Grimes Municipal Airport is a general aviation airport located one mile north of Urbana, Ohio on Route 68.  Facilities include a 4,400’ runway with full parallel taxiway.  Operations are supported by a GPS approach with vertical guidance and AWOS III weather reporting.  Grimes Municipal Airport is owned by the City of Urbana, but the Airport is 100% self-supporting, receiving no money from the City’s General Operating Fund.   Grimes Municipal Airport is managed by 1 full-time and 2 part-time associates.
  • Grimes Municipal Airport is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems and a member of the National Aviation Heritage Area.
  • Currently there are 64 aircraft based at Grimes Municipal Airport.  
  • The Champaign Aviation Museum continues to ‘re-build’ a B-17 bomber to flying condition.  Approximately 75% of the parts are being built brand new from scratch, so they are actually building a new B-17.   
  • The Grimes Flying Lab Museum & Foundation preserves and maintains the legacy of Warren Grimes, who is widely considered the ‘Father of the Modern Aviation Lighting Industry.
  • Urbana is home to Mid-America Flight Museum Restoration and is currently restoring multiple aircraft to flight worthy condition. Among these are fabric control surfaces for our B-17 Bomber, a Howard DGA-11, and the Gee Bee QED. Mid-America Flight Museum is based out of Mt Pleasant, TX. 
  • Grimes Municipal Airport is the only airport in the United States with 3 museums on site and is a member of the National Aviation Heritage Area (NAHA)

Welcome to Urbana

Urbana is a city in and the county seat of Champaign County, Ohio, United States, about 34 miles (55 km) northeast of Dayton and 41 miles (66 km) west of Columbus.
The population was 11,115 at the 2020 census. It is the principal city of the Urbana micropolitan area.
Urbana was laid out in 1805, and for a time in 1812 was the headquarters of the Northwestern army during the War of 1812. It is the burial place of the explorer and Indian fighter Simon Kenton.
The city was home to Urbana University and Curry Normal and Industrial Institute, a school for African American students.
