Our CIRRUS Training Courses

As the only aircraft in its General Aviation category, Cirrus offers a high standard of safety equipment and a large number of optional features that further enhance safety. Every Cirrus Aircraft SR Series model has been designed with passenger safety in mind, through the purposeful integration of many robust safety measures. Innovative systems, including Electronic Stability & Protection (ESP) and the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System® (CAPS®) provide a wide array of protective layers to protect the pilot and passengers.

Basic Transition Course

Cirrus Transition course is designed for licensed pilots who wish to fly a Cirrus aircraft. The course focuses on mastering aircraft control, engine management, use of avionics, use of autopilot, and important emergency/abnormal situations in VFR conditions. Completing the Transition Training course satisfies most insurance requirements.
If you are current but have never flown a Cirrus, the transition course, designed by Cirrus, has excellent structure and can be completed with one of our CSIP Instructors. The Transition Course utilizes Cirrus’ online computer training portal.

After completion, combined with some Cirrus flying of your own, you will become proficient and comfortable with the airplane.

In a very short time, you will undoubtedly become a fan of the capable Cirrus Aircraft.

The VFR Transition Courses will cover the following items:
  • Operational characteristics specific to Cirrus aircraft
  • VFR Maneuvering, takeoffs, and landings
  • Avionics and autopilot usage and management
  • Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM) and Risk Management
  • Cross country flight procedures
  • Abnormal and emergency procedures
  • Scenarios for use of the Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS)
  • Avionics malfunctions and abnormalities
  • Program, configure, and interpret Primary Flight Display (PFD) and Multi-Function Display (MFD) information for normal visual conditions

Typically, proficient pilots can expect to spend approximately three days (or equivalent) to complete the course. Emphasis is placed on the pilot gaining proficiency in all of the areas listed above. Upon completion of the course, you will be able to understand and operate relevant aircraft systems, maintain positive aircraft control in visual conditions and limited instrument conditions. Due to the technology integrated into the aircraft, significant emphasis is placed on your ability to effectively manage these resources to the extent necessary for flight in visual flight conditions. Actual time requirements may vary depending on your previous flight experience. Completion of the course can accomplish the requirements for a flight review.

Cirrus Transition Training Syllabus Averages:
  • 10 hours Cirrus Flight Time (6 hours minimum)
  • 10 Cross Country Legs (7 legs minimum)
  • 20 Landings (15 landings minimum)
  • 8 hours Ground Pre/Post Time (No minimum)
  • Pre-Training Assignments must be completed prior to transition training (Cirrus Training Kits)

Successful completion of all course objectives will result in a certificate of completion.

Advanced Transition Course

Maximize the aircraft’s utility by completing the Advanced Transition Training course. The Advanced Transition course is designed for pilots who hold an instrument rating. The course includes all the Basic Transition course work as well as IFR competency tasks. The minimum completion time is 8 hours of flight time with ground school and home study with a course average of 12 hours of flight time.
The Cirrus IFR Transition Course is designed for instrument rated pilots who have never flown Cirrus Aircraft. The course will transition current and proficient instrument rated pilots into a Cirrus SR20 or SR22 with a high level of instrument competency. You will be trained in both normal and abnormal scenarios for VFR and IFR operations. Emphasis will be placed on flying in the IFR system.

New Cirrus pilots will obtain an Instrument Proficiency Check (IPC) sign off in conjunction with course completion.

The IFR Transition Courses will cover the following items:
5 days ( or an additional 2 days after Transition Training)
Course content includes:
  • Cirrus Operational Characteristics
  • Maneuvering, Takeoffs, and Landings
  • Basic Attitude Instrument Flying
  • Avionics and autopilot usage

  • GPS, FMS, and WAAS (if applicable)
  • Aeronautical Decision Making (ADM) and Risk Management
  • Cross country flight planning and procedures
  • Abnormal and emergency procedures
  • Avionics malfunctions and abnormalities
Upon completion of the course, you will :
  • Gain all skills included in the Transition Training course
  • Train for full utilization of your instrument rating while developing proficiency in:
  • Precision and non-precision approaches
  • Missed approaches
  • Holding patterns
  • Departure procedures
  • Arrival procedures
  • Approach proficiency with and without the autopilot
  • Safely accommodate complex ATC instructions while operating under IFR
  • Gain confident awareness regarding controlled flight into terrain

Cirrus Airframe Parachute System

The Cirrus Airframe Parachute System (CAPS) is an integral part of any Cirrus. Before operating a Cirrus aircraft, the pilot should receive CAPS specific training.

The CAPS is designed to lower the aircraft and its passengers to the ground in the event of a life‐threatening emergency. Possible CAPS activation scenarios should be well thought out and mentally practiced by every Cirrus pilot.  Pilots who conduct CAPS training and practice using CAPS will have a higher probability of activating CAPS successfully when necessary.

  • Review available documentation about your aircraft and it’s safety features and systems (CAPS).
  • Scenario based training with CAPS
